Education & Outreach

Neil Hammerschlag, PhD (in collaboration and with the help of others as cited in context) is currently implementing unique outreach programs for local students, including RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program, a multi-disciplinary education and research program, as well as the Sea to Shining Sea virtual ocean exploration learning experience in association with the National Park Service.

RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program at University of Miami

Hammerschlag is the Founder and Director of the R.J. Dunlap Marine Conservation Program (RJD). The mission of RJD is to foster STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) literacy and advance marine conservation by conducting cutting edge scientific research and involving graduate, undergraduate and high school students through hands-on field and virtual learning experiences. These activities will expose students and teachers from across the globe to the importance of the ocean and terrestrial environments in their daily lives.  They will be made aware of the threats facing our oceans and coasts and to the solutions for conservation.  Education opportunities will be made especially for those in land-locked communities as well as those from underserved populations. Additionally, RJD will provide strategies to empower the public to play their individual role in marine and coastal conservation.

South Africa White Shark Studies

Students observing White SharkIn 2004, Neil Hammerschlag led local high school students on an expedition to South Africa to study white sharks. This trips was supported by a grant from the American Institute of Marine Studies to take teachers and students from South Broward High School's Marine Magnet Program to go to South Africa to study white sharks as part of ongoing research with Neil, R. Aidan Martin, Chris Fallows and Rob Lawrence.

Newspaper articles were written about the expedition and the PDFs can be downloaded here:

Upon returning from the expedition, the students produced a Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial-temporal map of the shark attacks they documented around Seal Island.

This is a copy of the interactive geographic information system map created by the students that shows the distribution of white sharks attacks around Seal Island in 2004. Cassaundra Meyers was the lead student working to create the map.

Sea To Shining Sea Virtual Learning Experience

Students analyze shark data collected in the fieldThe Sea to Shining Sea (STSS) is a project being established to expand both visitor access to National Parks on both coasts of the United States as well as to bring ocean exploration to students in classrooms via the Internet, wireless communications, and a Live Interactive Virtual Exploration (LIVE) system developed by the National Science Foundation funded High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network (HPWREN).

Neil is helping Susan Teel, Richard Curry and the National Park Service to establish the STSS project, which will enable LIVE science lectures directly from the ocean where field scientists describe their discoveries to audiences at Visitor Centers, museums, and schools. Program audiences will view and speak with remote presenters using the LIVE system, which can be paired with real-time sensors including natural sounds/acoustics, weather, water quality, seismicity, and underwater cameras.
